Synopsis

This reader is designed to accompany volume two of The Western Humanities, Sixth Edition. The anthology offers students selections from the West’s literary and philosophical heritage, to help them establish vital intellectual links to the achievements of the continually evolving Western tradition. Each reading is preceded by an introduction, which provides information about the author and historical context for the document. In addition, “Reading the Selections” sections provide more specific information to prepare the students for reading the documents to follow. Selections are footnoted.

Chronological arrangement correlates with The Western Humanities, Fourth Edition, by Roy T. Matthews and F. DeWitt Platt.
Extensive headnotes provide context to help students better understand the importance of each selection.
Two-volume format allows maximum flexibility; the readings can be packaged with the complete version of The Western Humanities, Fourth Edition, or with either one of the split volumes.
30 new readings (19 new readings in Volume I and 11 new readings in Volume II) have been added, including selections from the code of Hammurabi, Tertullian's The Apparel of Women, Martin Luther's The Ninety-five Theses, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Toni Morrison's The Song of Solomon'as well as poems by Marie de France, Gaspara Stampa, and William Butler Yeates.
