Active Art! The 6th edition Digital Content Manager offers new Active Art files for key Process Figures from the text. Each piece of art can be broken down to its core elements, grouped or ungrouped, and edited to create customized illustrations.
Throughout the book, the text narrative has been reworked to incorporate a more student-friendly style. More examples and analogies are included to help students grasp explanations of difficult concepts. Wording used in explanations has been simplified and/or smoothed out to improve readability.
Newly expanded transparency set: This exhaustive set of 1000 transparency overheads includes every piece of line art and most photos from the textbook, plus 187 unlabeled images.

Past editions of the text presented the topics of resting membrane potentials, action potentials, and responses of receptor molecules in a separate chapter. For the sixth edition, we have moved these discussions closer to topics where knowledge of these concepts is essential. In the process, this material has been integrated into appropriate discussions within chapter 3 (the functions of cells), chapter 9 (muscle physiology), chapter 11 (nervous system physiology), and chapter 17 (endocrine system physiology).
Coverage of the nervous system has been reorganized, and a new chapter has been added. The new sequence of chapters presents the basic organizational and functional characteristics of the nervous system (chapter 11), the structure and functions of the spinal cord and spinal nerves (chapter 12), the structure and functions of the brain and cranial nerves (chapter 13), and integrative functions of the nervous system in responding to sensory input and the generation of motor responses (new chapter 14).
