Continuous and Discrete Control Systems: Modeling, Identification, Design and Implementation, is an exciting new textbook from John Dorsey of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The book takes the reader through the entire design process and includes three case studies of actual systems that emphasize the experimental aspects of control design. Design is introduced early in the book via root locus analysis. A broad range of topics is covered including an introduction to modern robust control and state space analysis.
The book is intended for a variety of 1-semester controls courses. The author has tried to bring the reader as close to a real laboratory experience as possible by walking the reader through each step of the design process: modeling, identification, design and especially implementation.

The book includes more than 1200 solved problems, including a set of open design problems. These design problems are introduced for root locus design, and revisited for bode design, and state space design, illustrating how different design methods work for a common set of problems. All of the problems have been solved in detail for the instructor on the book's website.
Three chapters in the book are devoted to case studies of actual physical systems that cover the complete design cycle from modeling to implementation. These case studies include detailed figures of laboratory setups, while solutions for the problems in the case study chapters include results of actually implementing the control.
An introductory chapter on modern robust control, showing its relationship to classical techniques, has been included.
The text includes extensive coverage of transportation lags for both continuous and sampled data systems. It also contains thorough coverage of the state space systems including development of the controller/observer for both the regulator and tracking problems.
A free CD-ROM containing MATLAB m-files, discussions and examples of the MATLAB commands relevant to each chapter, and test data for the three case studies comes with the book.Additional homework problems will be added to the website over the next year to provide more variety.
