"Just Enough UNIX" provides a quick and gentle introduction to the UNIX operating system. The fourth edition of this highly successful text reflects changes and updates to the UNIX curriculum that have taken place since the publication of the third edition. The book is written in a clear, straightforward style that avoids unnecessary jargon. This short, yet comprehensive text covers the basics of UNIX. It can be used in both a freshman engineering course or to supplement other courses where the student needs to learn UNIX for the first time. The book is enhanced by strong pedagogical tools that will be very useful to those in the classroom, as well as those engaged in self-study.

Increased Quantity of Exercises. Feedback from users and reviewers has shown the need for additional homework problems and exercises.
Retained Features. This new edition continues its coverage of internet tools such as gopher and the WWW, shell programming and the UNIX file system. Illustrations and anecdotal boxes serve to highlight information that makes the evolution and development of UNIX understandable.
Graphical Interfaces. The third edition takes up where the second edition left off by including a new chapter with coverage of the CDE interface. The book continues the concept that the typical student is using the most current engineering workstation running the most current graphical user interface, including both one based on the X Window system and CDE. This will make the book relevant to a wider range of UNIX courses.
Text Editors. The reader will learn to create or modify UNIX files using a utility program called an editor. In addition to the vi editor, the book now includes coverage of the emacs, pico and CDE editors. At some schools, the vi editor may be too difficult or outdated. Including these other editors gives instructors a wider range of distribution packages to choose from for their course.
Processing Mail. One of the most useful utilities is electronic mail. The book includes coverage of more up-to-date mail software: pine and Mail Tool. Write and talk are considered out-of-date mail software programs at some schools. The inclusion of these additional software programs reflects the changes in the field and will make the book more accessible for instructors and students.
