Kleyn features health-oriented experiments covering topics that are included in a lecture course for non-majors going into an allied health field.
Experiments are basic, easy to follow, inexpensive, and time-efficient, and are, therefore, ideal for instructors who have little time, expertise, or money.
Experiments follow the spirit of the ASM guidelines for laboratory content.
A new Preparator's Manual will accompany the new edition of the lab manual and will provide helpful information, including answers to questions in the lab manual and prep materials and procedures for each experiment.
The lab manual is correlated to the new edition of Nester's Microbiology: A Human Perspective, 3/e. Nester page references are given in each chapter of the manual.
New content has been added:
The manual includes two new experiments in which students apply some of the techniques used in biotechnology to identify DNA.
Four individual projects have been added that provide flexibility in teaching and also expand the breadth of the manual beyond health-related topics and into the diversity of nonpathogenic microorganisms. Students will isolate and culture bacteria that degrade oil spills, that glow in the dark, that consume 1-carbon compounds, and that are resistant to UV light.
Five new appendices have been added that provide basic technique and practice problems in using the metric system, making pH adjustments measuring cell size, counting cells, and preparing slide cultures.
John Kleyn received a Ph.D. in bacteriology from Cornell University and currently acquires books for Indonesian Universities.
Professor Emeritus, Highline Community College
Chair of Microbiology Department Wife, Martha, is a coauthor.
