Writing to Learn is a process and product-based writing series that spans four levels - beginning, low-intermediate, high-intermediate, and advanced. The goal of the series is is to take students from writing good sentences to writing clear and effective essays. Each book makes use of students' skills and experiences to generate writing topics.
Each of the Writing to Learn texts is designed to help students improve their writing for academic and vocational success. Throughout the series an emphasis is placed on vocabulary acquisition, grammar practice, and writing, editing, rewriting, and journaling skills.
Writing to Learn, The Essay, is aimed at advanced level writers and concentrates on improving student essay writing skills and enhancing personal writing styles.

In each chapter of every book, the prewriting and structure activities build toward a specific writing task. Editing is a regular, integrated step in the writing process, even at the beginning level.
Grammar structures are chosen due to their relevance and bearing upon the specific writing task that students are practicing. The grammar exercises also serve as models for writing.
Various writing samples appear within the structure and editing exercises, giving students a variety of examples to learn from.
Chapter-culminating journal writing topics allow students to synthesize what they have studied and practiced in the chapter.
Each annotated Teacher's Edition includes specific teaching notes and chapter quizzes.
