But unlike so many works on this subject, I want my MP3!, is a title not for the businessman, nor the record producer, nor the programmer, but a book for those who just want to be able to listen, copy and play music on their PCs.

I Want my MP3! covers the process of installing and using MP3 players, rippers and utilities, as well as explaining how to search for files using MP3 search engines; how to burn MP3s onto CDs; and how to buy the right PC, boom box, car radio or portable player on which to play your funky tunes. The author has 11 books to his credit, and his well-worn writing style is clear and concise, if a tad perfunctory. The CD that accompanies this title has some interesting songs on it, and many of the applications featured in the book are included, where freebie or shareware versions are available. Where other books of this type are dominated by screenshots of the much used but much seen WinAmp player, Mann makes good use of the Sonique and MusicMatch Jukebox player in examples and instructions throughout the text.

Those who are looking for a few top tips to finding stashes of illegal MP3s will be very disappointed--it seems that Mann is a man with a conscience. But for every other digital music enthusiast, particularly those with more enthusiasm than experience, this guide is recommended. --Josh Smith
