This text looks at network management tools for the linux platform. It focuses on the tasks that administrators need to perform on a daily basis and provides, in a single resource, all the tools they need to do it. Although focus is on Red Hat it provides coverage of all major flavours of Linux.

Red Hat Linux Network Management Tools looks at the considerable networking capabilities of Linux 2.2.x from the perspective of a network administrator who is responsible for fitting the open-source operating system (and its various utilities) into a large, heterogeneous computer network. Despite the title of the book, the author doesn't limit himself to Red Hat Linux. He's also careful to explain key networking technologies such as the TCP/IP protocol stack and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), so don't be afraid to pick this book up if you're not a whiz at everything to do with networking. You'll learn the technologies as Steve Maxwell introduces you to Linux's tools for interacting with them.
Network management matters are approached one at a time via Linux tools. In explaining Ethernet monitoring, for example, the tcpdump and ethereal tools are introduced and their functions explained. Readers get full documentation of the utilities--command-line switches and the like--as well as annotated listings of the programs' reports and text describing how to use the reports effectively. There is particularly deep coverage of SNMP under Linux, with lengthy explanations of how SNMP fits into a well-managed Linux network, documentation of the Management Information Base II (MIB-II), object collection, and SNMP software. --David Wall
Topics covered: Tools and technologies for effectively managing TCP/IP networks that involve Linux computers. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is covered thoroughly and appropriately, and readers find out all about the SNMP tools available for Linux. Other diagnostic and reporting utilities are also discussed.
