The following is what i sought to accomplish with this book.
The primary objectives that i had in mind for "ATM for Public Networks" were to discuss topics related to carrying voice and data over ATM, and the interworking of ATM with existing network services. One approach that i took in the book that i think is different from other books is to examine the interactions of IP and ATM, and TCP and ATM as separate topics.

i also present technology comparisons that allow the reader to understand the comparative efficiencies of IP over ATM versus IP over SONET, and voice over ATM versus voice over H.323/IP versus voice over H.323/ATM.

In addition, i discuss the implications of ATM for the Internet, and how ATM interworks with the Integrated Services Internet, and RSVP. i also present case studies to show the deployment of ATM in the Internet.

i really did attempt to write the book objectively and to avoid the "ATM is God" hyperbole or the "ATM is dead" pessimism. Instead, i sought to provide the reader with a conceptual framework for understanding the capabilities of ATM, and for evaluating ATM versus other technology options. Rather than attempting to prescribe ATM as "the answer," my intention is for the reader to decide where (or if) ATM can be of the most benefit.
