Protection is the art and science of detecting abnormal behaviour of a system and of initiating action to minimize damage and permit timely return of the system to normal. In a power system, this requires prompt action, as many of the problems requiring protective action, such as high voltage short circuits, have the potential of causing great harm to physical systems, if not removed very quickly. Much of the analysis regarding power system protection requires knowledge of the power system behaviour in response to abnormal events, for it is necessary to correctly recognize and analyze events in order to command prompt protective action. This book presents the analysis of the power system that will enable the proper corrective action to be initiated.

From the Back Cover:
In a world of huge, interconnected networks that can be completely blacked out by disturbances, Power System Protection offers an improved understanding of the requirements necessary for prompt and accurate corrective action. P.M. Anderson, a noted expert on power systems, presents an analytical and technical approach to power system protection. His discussion shows how abnormal system behavior can be detected before damage occurs, and points to effective control action to limit system outages. Advance your knowledge of power system protection through a better understanding of:
  • Protective devices and controls
  • Protection concepts
  • Transmission protection
  • Apparatus protection
  • System aspects of protective systems
  • Reliability analysis of protective systems
Power System Protection is written for practicing engineers and advanced graduate–level student engineers, who need a comprehensive resource on the principles of power system behavior and methods of system analysis. This essential reference work provides new and advanced concepts for understanding systems performance.
About the Author:
P.M. Anderson has over 40 years of experience in power system engineering and research, power education, technical writing, and research management. His areas of interest are power system analysis, computer applications, and system dynamic performance. Currently a consultant, Dr. Anderson served as a professor of engineering at Iowa State University, Arizona State University, and Washington State University, where he was the Schweitzer Visiting Professor. Dr. Anderson is the author of Analysis of Faulted Power Systems (IEEE Press, 1995) and coauthor of Power System Control and Stability (IEEE Press, 1994), Subsynchronous Resonance in Power Systems (IEEE Press, 1990), and Series Compensation of Power Systems (PBLSH!, Inc., 1996).
