From the Author

"Enterprise Java" approach to using Java in the real world
This book is for the IS professional who needs to learn how and where to deploy Java in real applications, rather than toy applets. Our approach is to explain Java's strategic importance, and then work the reader through the nuts and bolts of writing Java applications for an enterprise (hence the title!) We do not assume C/C++ or OO experience, so we include a gentle introduction to the concepts necessary to program in Java, including Java APIs and threading.

From fundamentals, we move to a survey of application enablers like JDBC, RMI, and network programming, with programming examples and explanations.

We guide the reader among today's many choices, for example, describing different IDEs and comparing Java Beans to ActiveX. We also describe Java's risks and limitations, and discuss security so the reader can safely deploy and manage it.

After reading this book, the reader should have a good understanding of when to use Java, and a base of skills to start building Java applications.
