This cross-curricular composition reader emphasizes writing as thinking. Organized thematically, it includes prose works spanning various ages, cultures and subjects. It encourages students to respond actively to the essays, to formulate their own critical judgements, and to develop in writing their reaction to and perspectives on the thematic concerns of the selections. The essays address current issues such as the death penalty, affirmative action, the role of technology and the impact of media.

Full Chapter on Argument. Chapter 2, Reading and Writing Effective Arguments, offers students guidelines for reading arguments critically and writing strong arguments of their own. It provides five professional readings, including classic and contemporary essays on the death penalty and two additional essays for analysis.
Classic and Contemporary Visuals. Each chapter offers paired images related to the chapter subject, including photographs, paintings, and political cartoons, along with a critical thinking activity that prompts students to compare and evaluate visuals.
Paired Classic & Contemporary Essays. Now appearing at the beginning of the chapters, each pair presents an older essay with a more recent one so that students can compare the ideas, follow the history of contemporary debates, and gain new perspectives on issues and the ways in which they develop over time.
