This guide to the new technology within ATM, provides readers with an understanding of switching basics and key protocols required for applications such as desktop conferencing, digital video and multimedia. This text offers a simple explanation of how fast packet switching works and how it differs from X.25: the well established CCITT standard for fastpacket switching. Written for planners, developers and carriers of broad band services this guide discusses internals and architectures of protocols and offers a market-aware treatment of engineering and cost issues. The book includes case studies for a number of different applications.

Handle tomorrow's terabit traffic streams . . .
Switching is the ATM key that unlocks new, bandwidth-intensive applications such as digital video, desktop video conferencing, multimedia, imaging, and distance learning. IP APPLICATIONS WITH ATM (Computing McGraw-Hill; June 1998; $55.00) by John Amoss and Daniel Minoli, is an in-depth ATM guide that explains the critical technology and capabilities that constitute the switching component of an ATM network.
The authors draw on decades of industry experience to help readers address the technical, economic, design, and business issues required to successfully deploy this new technology. Written for communications engineers, equipment suppliers, and carriers, readers will find a full range of ATM knowledge, including:
· An up-to-the-minute picture of ATM technology
· Full coverage of the underlying physical technologies necessary for deployment, e.g., the Synchronous Optical Network and various ATM Adaptation Layers
· A comprehensive overview of the standards that support ATM networking
· Clear, generic, logical, functional views of an ATM switch
· Insights into the ATM products offered by major vendors, including Cisco (Tag Switching), Ipsilon (IP Switching), LANE (LAN Emulation), and MPOA (Multiprotocol over ATM)
· Detailed case studies of actual switches as deployed in the industry
· Proven guidelines for costing out and designing a combined IP and ATM network
