Don't let financial myths keep you from the life you want
I grew up on a farm in Loveland, Colorado. We didn’t talk about money at my dinner table. Yet, when I graduated from college, I found that I was supposed to have this money thing all figured out. So I slowly began educating myself and this eventually led me to a career as a fee-only Certified Financial Planner.
As I saw client after client in my practice, I noticed how stressed out about money they were. And I also began to see some recurring themes of what produced this stress. Worrying about owning a house, paying for college and retirement to name a few. I also was struck by my clients that chose to take a different tack than all the "shoulds" we constantly hear. They seemed to have a healthier relationship with money and be more at peace with their money decisions.
I wrote this book to help dispel some of the myths that I think drive us, often in the wrong direction, about money. To point out that conventional wisdom doesn’t necessarily take into consideration that our financial decisions are multi-faceted—that they depend on our unique situation. And to remind us that we have a choice about how we use money in our life.
You may read a myth and after reflecting on it still go ahead and do what conventional wisdom suggests, but at least you will do it now based on a choice instead of automatically. (I’ve noticed in life that when I feel that I’ve done something because I chose to do it instead of feeling like I had to, I’m a lot happier with my decision.) Others of you will read a myth and say, "Thank God someone is giving me permission to go against what everybody else says I should do!"
I’ll also challenge you to look at where your true happiness comes from and how truly blessed we are already. So go ahead, put it in your shopping cart and maybe by the time your done reading it you may agree that everything you know about money is wrong.
