Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Aaron J. Ihde's substantial history of chemistry, tracing the development of the science from ancient ideas about matter and the alchemical tradition through the major theoretical, experimental, and technological advances of the twentieth century. Illustrated throughout, with a frontispiece after Jacques-Louis David's portrait of Antoine Laurent Lavoisier and his wife. 851 pages. A major twentieth-century reference work in the history of chemistry and one of Ihde's best-known publications. Condition: Hardcover volume is solid and internally clean in the pages examined, with general age and handling wear. Brief ink inscription, "To Ollie," on the front endpaper. Page edges show some age toning and light soiling.
