303pp , in English , ABOUT THE AUTHOR :: Sheridan Baker , educator and author , died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on June 30 after a short illness. In World War II , he served more than six years with the US Navy in the destroyers in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters , reaching the rank of lieutenant commander. He received his undergraduate and advanced degrees at the University of California, Berkeley , where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta . Sheridan began his distinguished career in English literature at the University of Michigan in 1950 and retired as professor emeritus in 1984. He received a Fulbright professor at the University of Nagoya , Japan , in 1961 and a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, in 1978. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the UM in 1960. He used his editorial talents in many publications, including the Michigan Quarterly Review in 1964-1971 . It was a published poet and a scholar of the 18th century with an abiding interest in the writings of Henry Fielding . He published articles on the work of Fielding and scholarly editions of Tom Jones and Shamela . He was also very interested in the teaching of writing , and wrote books on rhetoric , which included many editions of The Stylist Practice, essayist , the complete stylist and practical imagination . Also published Ernest Hemingway : Introduction and Interpretation Manual Harper and literature . " Baker was probably the faculty member in our department better known nationally , partly through its text composition selling , stylist Practice, and partly for his work in Fielding, " said Richard W. Bailey, English teacher . " He had a keen eye for detail and was proud of the fact that his edition of Tom Jones ( Norton ) was higher verbatim the volume - works ' definitive ' complete published by Wesleyan .
