Synopsis
George Brockway sees economics as a humanistic discipline. He isn't too concerned with mathematics, but focuses instead on the more fundamental issues. In simple language, this book defines basic terms and answers the following questions: What is money? How does the stock market work? How does the Government affect the economy and how should it? Are there really "laws" of economics and is it a science? Why do we have recessions and depressions? Where is the economy heading? The author gives a description of the way things are and an opinion of the way they should be. He uncovers assumptions that are silently and often unconsciously made by economists. He restates the "law" of supply and demand, analyzes the effect of speculation, clarifies the conflict between wages and interest rates, and emphasizes the moral imperatives with which economics must ultimately concern itself.
