In Spaces , Sara M. Evans and Harry C. Boyte argue for a new understanding of the foundations for democratic politics by yzing the settings in which people learn to participate in democracy. In their new Introduction, the authors link the concept of spaces to recent theoretical discussions about community, public life, civil society, and social movements.

Sara M. Evans is Chair of the Department of History at the University of Minnesota and the author of Personal Politics and coauthor (with Barbara J. Nelson) of Wage Justice. Harry C. Boyte is Director of Project Public Life at the University of Minnesota and the author of The Backyard Revolution and Commonwealth.
