Synopsis
The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life is the classic work of sociology by Emile Durkheim one of the founders of modern sociology. Analyzing the social phenomenon of religion across the ages and geographical boundaries Durkheim finds that early humans associated feelings with objects in their environment that they turn into objects of power. With the objects of power leading to early religion in totemism. Looking at some of the most basic forms of religious organization Durkheim separates out the core of religious rites, with only the concept of sacredness being the unifying theme in all religions.
