Synopsis
"A Time to Hear, A Time to Help" is a personal testimony to the often difficult and painful process of learning how to listen. Through portraits of his relationships with his patients, their families and friends, Rosenblum teaches us to understand the problems cancer patients face. For those with cancer, the fear of being reduced to the progress of a terrifying illness is as great as the fear of death itself, and as coping with illness brings out the deepest emotions and concerns of the patient, often the most thoughtful, comforting thing one can do is to just listen. This book examines the elements of anger, denial, anxiety, the will to fight and the need for self-esteem and information in the patient, as well as the fear, anger and frustration felt by those outside. Designed to be a source of help and comfort, it points readers toward coping with pain and loss, without losing sight of the one who is suffering the most.
