In November 1979 the US embassy in Tehran was seized by militants, who took the occupants hostage. Bruce Laingen, the senior American diplomat in Iran, was imprisoned for 444 days, and wrote this account on scraps of paper, smuggled out with the help of diplomats who were allowed to visit him.
