Whose words shamed Senator Joseph McCarthy and brought the American anti–Communist witch–hunt to an end? (Joseph Welch, see Persecution) Who quipped “Brevity is the soul of lingerie”? (Dorothy Parker, see Dress) And who, demanding equal billing with Katherine Hepburn, declared “This is a movie, not a lifeboat”? (Spencer Tracy, see Cinema) The Collins Quotation Finder is a searchable compilation of 13,000 quotations, ancient and modern, thematically arranged for easy access, ranging from Fame and Sports to Religion and Politics, from Homer to Homer Simpson. An ideal reference for anyone writing speeches, essays, or letters as well as for trivia, quiz, and crossword buffs. From Booklist:
This collection of more than 13,000 ancient and modern quotations is arranged alphabetically under topics such as "Accidents," "Hollywood," "House of Lords," "Shopping," and "War." Sources include Goldie Hawn, Homer, Keats, Homer Simpson, Alice Walker, and the Tenth Earl of Westmorland. Quotes are short, generally not longer than a sentence or two.
As the introduction points out, there are many compilations of quotations available, and what makes this one unique (at least for now) is its recent publication date. It is the only one to include, for example, Jeremy Paxman's question in June 1999 to Henry Kissinger on BBC radio, "Didn't you feel a fraud accepting the Nobel Peace Prize?"
In addition to the quotes, a short biographies section briefly identifies the individuals quoted. Two indexes, one of themes and one of sources, complete the volume. There is no keyword index. By no means comprehensive but very affordable, this resource would be accessible to many different groups of patrons and is recommended for libraries needing another supplemental quotation title.
