Wurts’ incredibly successful Wars of Light and Shadow series continues.
The curse that hangs over the Master of Shadow, Arithon, and Lord of Light, Lysaer is drawing the two half-brothers ever closer toward direct conflict. For the Narural Balance to be maintained, the two must never fight, for if they do, one is sure to perish and the Mistwraith will regain its evil power over their world.
Even now, Lysaer – convinced now of his own godhead and aided in treacherous ways by the Koriani Sisterhood – is tracking the Masterbard through the snows and wastes of the winter-locked mountains and the Barrens of Daon Ramon. Arithon, tortured by his desperation at knowing that for the sake of future generations, he must not be killed, no matter at what cost of others’ lives now, but fighting valiantly to prevent unnecessary suffering, strikes out on his own; but he is injured and failing fast. Meanwhile, the ancient Paravians are stirring, summoned by trespassers on their sacred domain; and the Fellowship of Seven are battling on many other fronts, as the Mistwraith’s wards begin to break; and khadrim and free wraiths roam the land…

Janny Wurts is the author of the Cycle of Fire series, co-author of the worldwide bestselling Empire series with Raymond E. Feist, and is currently working through the Wars of Light and Shadow series. She often paints her own covers and is also an expert horsewoman, sailor, musician and archer.
On the world of Athera, two half brothers gifted of Light and Shadow defeated the Mistwraith. It's revenge left them cursed to life-long enmity, splitting the world into war and coils of deadly intrigue. Lysaer and his alliance of Light have raised new forces and touched on the lore of blood magecraft to bring down Arithon, Master of Shadow. The Koriani Enchantresses also seek to capture Arithon, and use him as their pawn to destroy the world's balance and break the Fellowship Sorcerers' compact.
The wily enemy seems ripe for defeat. Just escaped from the scaffold, now set under heated pursuit, Arithon is thwarted in his plans to rejoin the spellbinder, Dakar, and slip off to safety at sea. The failed Koriani plot to take him has loosed unnatural forces: imbalances weaken the wards that confine the Mistwraith, a breaking crisis which forces Dakar's return to Fellowship service.
Arithon must flee inland alone, over the mountains to Daon Ramon Barrens. Harried by winter weather and armed guards, he will ride into the teeth of Lysaer's specialised assault troops. His nearest defenders are Jieret's clan warband, a diminutive force too small to prevail, and too far away to bring rescue. Other interests entangle their thread with Arithon's fate: the ousted Sorcerer, Davien the Betrayer, stirs from his retreat in Kewar Tunnel. Elaira, the enchantress who hold Arithon's heart, walks the narrowest path of them all – her choice: to betray the man she loves to the Koriani prime, or to risk self-destruction in rebellion against her order.
"Janny Wurts writes with astonishing energy; she aims high. Just when you think she's gone as far as anyone can go, she raises the stakes… it ought to be illegal for one person to have so much talent"
STEPHEN R. DONALDSON
"Janny Wurts builds beautiful castles in the air… where every detail is richly imagined and vividly rendered"
DIANA GABALDON
"With each new book it becomes more and more obvious how important Janny Wurts is to contemporary fantasy"
GUY GAVRIEL KAY
