From the Back Cover

Unmistakably Lessing, this book insinuates itself into the imagination with the skill and grace of a cat, a brilliant evocation of feline existence… With her intensely visual imagination and cool, precise eye, Doris Lessing comes nearer than any writer to understanding the elusive nature of cats, whether they are half-wild beasts on an African farm or the domesticated creatures who share her life in London.

"Grey Cat strolls around the bed at night, choosing her favoured place, in the angle behind my knees or against the curve of my foot. She licks my face delicately, then settles down. In the morning when she wishes me to wake, she crouches on my chest and pats my face with her paw. If I am on my side, she crouches, looking into my face. Soft, soft touches of her paw…"

"The author tells her story straight and simply, with none of those anthropomorphic touches that make you want to throw a can of tuna at people…"
