Synopsis

A terrifying and moving study of innocence in peril from the double-award winner of the John Creasy and Edgar prizes.

San Francisco homicide detective Kate Martinelli becomes involved in a nightmare that begins in her off-duty life and turns into a crime for which she feels herself responsible…

Alone in the house she shares with her partner, Lee, Kate is isolated and angry: Lee, recovering from a near-fatal gunshot wound, decides she must spend time on her own, a move Kate can only see as rejection. Lonely and confused, Kate befriends the bright, quirky twelve-year-old Jules, and when the girl’s parents go on a trip, Kate agrees to care for her. But when Kate decides to ‘drop in’ to the farm where Lee is staying, events spiral out of control. During the trip, in a rural area where a serial killer has been victimising young girls, Jules disappears…

From the Back Cover

Detective Kate Martinelli is feeling dispirited and rejected after her lover decides she needs to be alone. Her only solace is the twelve-year-old Jules, who enlists Kate’s aid in finding a homeless kid who has gone missing.

When Jules’ parents plan a holiday without her, Kate volunteers to take the girl on a visit to Northern Washington. But events spiral nightmarishly out of control when Jules vanishes from her motel room in an area where a serial killer has been targeting young girls who match her description.

Unbearably gripping and deeply moving, 'With Child' is an extraordinary novel from the award-winning author of 'A Grave Talent' and 'To Play the Fool'.

“Tense, tortuous and tremendously powerful, this is an emotional rollercoaster ride…a handful of crime novels bring a lump to my eyes. 'With Child' is one. I could not put it down”
VAL MCDERMID

“Pacy, skilfully layered narrative, notable for its wit, affection and unflashy know-how”
