Prepared by the National Extension College, "Advanced Modular Mathematics" is structured around the University of London (ULEAC) A and AS Level mathematics modules, but can be used by any student who is looking for extra support, especially for revision. This text aims to develop basic skills in algebra and moves through to functions. Divided into short units, the book provides a brief introduction to the study matter, with explanatory text explaining the background and theory to each topic, suggesting approaches for solving problems and approaching unfamiliar questions. Exercises are provided at the end of each section, with section summaries summing up what should have been covered, allowing students to check for themselves whether they are satisfied that they have completed the section.

“The class that works through them diligently will have practised each type of problem many times… They will meet no surprises in the exams…”
'Advanced Modular Mathematics' is structured around the University of London (EdExcel) A- and AS-level mathematics modules – but the unique nature of these books will make them useful for any students who are looking for extra support at A- or AS-level, especially for revision.
The books have been prepared by the National Extension College, leaders in producing learner-centred materials. This series brings their experience to mathematics texts for the first time:
• student-friendly materials
• teaching through lively, direct text
• 100s of examples, exercises and solutions.
The EdExcel syllabus states its aims as:
'…to enable students to acquire knowledge and skills with confidence, satisfaction… to develop resourcefulness in solving problems… to develop students' understanding of mathematical reasoning… to apply mathematics…'.
'Advanced Modular Mathematics' places great emphasis on developing these aims, and encouraging real understanding, allowing students to apply this knowledge to any problems that they come across.
Material has been trialled as part of the NEC's flexible-learning packages. These books are therefore particularly useful to students in colleges and schools who are spending some time working through supported self-study.
