Synopsis

From the author of Days of Drums comes another gripping novel of Washington intrigue that involves a series of horrific murders triggered by hidden scandals in the corridors of power.

When General Griffin North, a highly decorated black general, is killed in a suspicious plane crash, the special investigative commission pronounces it a tragic accident caused by pilot error. But Mollie Smith of the Criminal Investigation Division is certain that the general was assassinated and vows to keep the investigation alive. Keenly aware that certain highly-placed officials would stop at nothing to keep a black man from presidential office, Mollie intensifies her inquiry – but before she can solve the case she is found brutally murdered.

Rachel Collins, Mollie’s protégée and close friend, is left to pick up the chase. With the help of Mollie’s brother, Logan, the head of the specialist top-secret FBI team that tracks domestic terrorists, Rachel must confront the Engineer, an ingenious and ruthless killer whose sole goal is to cut short her inquiry – and her life. The Engineer is working to the orders of a powerful and shadowy figure whose mysterious resources and confidential information continually help him to thwart Rachel – a man whose influence obviously places him near the top of the Washington power base…
