Synopsis

Neil Ruddock relives the controversial moments in his career in this fully updated paperback edition of his warts and all autobiography, including a full account of West Ham’s eventful 1999/2000 Premiership campaign.

‘Razor’ Ruddock has had a chequered career since he left school at sixteen to sign for his local club, Millwall, where he came under the tutelage of George Graham and was a team-mate of Teddy Sheringham.

Two years later he got his big break at Southampton, refining a reputation as a tough defender and a player not be messed with. Ruddock recalls some fascinating dressing room stories at the Den, including those involving a then young Saints striker, Alan Shearer.

Spurs boss Terry Venables paid £2 million to bring Ruddock to White Hart Lane, but a bust-up with Alan Sugar after Venables’ departure meant his days at the club were numbered. In 1993 Graeme Souness persuaded him north to join Liverpool; Ruddock recalls his fluctuating fortunes as he struggled with a weight problem and found life far from easy during his five years at the Merseyside club.

Now a rejuvenated Ruddock finds himself at Upton Park, with a host of colourful team-mates including Paolo Di Canio and John Moncur, and making the headlines again over the Patrick Vieira spitting incident, of which he gives his side of the story. And in a new chapter for 1999/2000, Ruddock looks at the highs and lows of the Hammers’ season, with many more tales to tell.

About the Author

Dave Smith, co-writer on this book with Neil Ruddock, was editor of Shoot magazine until 1997. He now works as a freelance match reporter and has been involved with the setting up and development of ‘Football 365’, a dedicated soccer web site on the internet. He has co-written autobiographies with Trevor Steven, Dave Beasant and Gary Stevens, and is the author of several soccer coaching and fitness books.

From the Back Cover

Love him or loathe him, Neil Ruddock has always ignited the passions of football fans wherever he has played, be it Millwall, Tottenham, Southampton, Liverpool or West Ham.

In his hell-raising autobiography, the pride of Upton Park cheerfully exposes the myth that he is bent on trouble, and writes openly about former managers and team-mates past and present, from Glenn Hoddle and George Graham to Matt Le Tissier and Robbie Fowler and, more recently, Paolo Di Canio.

A fully updated chapter for this new edition focuses on the 1999/2000 season and further headline-making episodes in the colourful career of the ever-popular Ruddock.

'Cutting stuff, frequently witty…an entertaining read.'
