The long-awaited Guidance Note 7 - Special Locations finally made its appearance in mid-1998 and Chapter 7 has been substantially rewritten to take account of it. This includes coverage of marinas, medical locations, and exhibitions, shows and stands which are each given a chapter in the Guidance Note, but are not yet in BS7671. These situations are now fully covered in Chapter 7 of The Electrician's Guide both because it can surely only be a matter of time before they are a part of the Requirements for Electrical Installations, and because the information will be valuable to practising electricians.
The December 1997 amendments to the Wiring Regs necessitated extensive updating of the Guide. Electricians need to be aware that over seventy Regulations have been amended, six have been deleted, seven re-numbered and thirty-four are totally new.
 Some significant changes are:
-- Twelve definitions changed, three created
 -- Many BS numbers replaced
-- Circuit segregation now uses two voltage bands which must only occupy the same space under specified conditions. More responsibility thus applies to the designer to prevent EMI
-- Sheathed and insulated cables must be used for SELV
-- Tests for the separation of ELV systems are now at 500 volts rms ac rather than dc
-- 1.5 sq mm mineral insulated cable is now acceptable for ring circuits
-- Certificates for installations have been modified
-- A new minor works certificate has been added
-- Requirements for separation to meet EMC have been improved
-- A new section details requirements for generators
-- A significant change in requirements for hot air saunas
