Growing garlic should be simple: plant a clove, care for it through the seasons, and harvest a full, healthy bulb. Yet many gardeners do everything that seems right and still end up with undersized bulbs, weak plants, poor clove formation, rot, or garlic that refuses to store well.
5 Common Garlic Planting Mistakes to Avoid helps beginners understand where those problems really begin—and how to prevent them before an entire growing season is lost.
Thomas G. Roberts takes you through the five mistakes that most often undermine a garlic crop: choosing the wrong garlic, planting in poorly prepared soil, planting at the wrong time, setting cloves incorrectly, and mismanaging water and fertility. Instead of relying on one-size-fits-all rules, the book shows you how to read your climate, soil, planting stock, weather, foliage, moisture, roots, scapes, and bulbs so you can make better decisions for your own garden.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:
• Choose healthy seed garlic and understand hardneck and softneck types
• Select a sunny, well-drained site and prepare soil for strong root growth
• Recognize the right planting window for cold and mild climates
• Plant cloves at practical depths, orientation, and spacing
• Use mulch, irrigation, and fertilizer without encouraging rot or weak growth
• Guide garlic through winter, spring growth, scape development, and bulbing
• Recognize common pests, diseases, and growing problems before they spread
• Know when garlic is ready to harvest
• Cure and store bulbs so more of your crop keeps its quality
• Diagnose small bulbs, missing plants, split wrappers, poor clove division, and storage losses
Whether you are planting a few cloves in a raised bed, filling a backyard garden, or trying to improve a disappointing crop from last season, this guide turns garlic growing into a clear sequence of practical decisions.
Stop guessing at what went wrong after harvest. Learn what to look for from the moment you choose your planting stock, avoid the mistakes that cost gardeners bulb size and quality, and build a garlic-growing routine you can improve season after season.
