作者於五十幾年以前來到美國,讀完書在海外學術界走過一段長遠的路,是一個旅美的讀書人。這本書中的二十七篇散文共分四組,包括「學府記歷」、「書海記趣」、「病毒記虐」與「家居記事」,每一組内有六至七篇文章;絕大部份都是他自二○一八年以來的近作。第一部分記述他涉足一些中外名校之歷程與有關學人之逸事,第二部分含有三本名著的讀後報告,第三部分中的文章皆與新冠病毒有關,最後一部分較長的那篇在於評述這半個多世紀以來美國、中國大陸與台灣世局之變遷。

我於一九六二年一月,從台灣基隆港坐一艘開往美國的貨船。在太平洋上飄盪一個月,然後坐灰狗巴士,於大風雪中抵達明尼蘇達大學的校園,開始過留學生勤工儉學的日子,那已經是半個多世紀以前的事了。轉瞬之間,我與我内人皆是退休之身;全家大小十四個人中,有六個孫輩,大孫女也是一所大學裡的新生,日子過得真是快呀!

我在美國退休以前,一直在學術界工作,是一個讀書人,所讀過的書,恐怕一輛小貨車都裝載不下。退休後想換換跑道,開始「不務正業」,很少再讀專業方面的書,而是讀過一些中文書刊,包括好幾本中文古典文學作品在内。總體言之,讀書是我自小學時代養成的習慣,而且也因此養成我愛到處看學校的習慣。這些年來我真看過一些高等院校,美國的大學幾乎是全國走透透,一些歐美與中國大陸上的名校校園中,也有過我的足跡。現在回想起來,其中的歷程實在是值得一記。

這本書中所收集的二十七篇文章,一共分為四組,分别是「學府記歷」、「書海記

趣」、「病毒記虐」與「家居記事」,所以此書也可以命名為《一個讀書人的四記》。每一組中有六至七篇文章,文章的長短則不太一致,可以從一頁到二十四頁。除了一兩篇,這些文章是我在二O一八年至二O二O年之間寫出來的。

「學府記歷」中的記歷,是在借用沈三白名著《浮生六記》中卷五:〈中山記歷〉的最後那兩個字。其中有七篇文章,我是以講故事的心態,來記述涉足這些名校的歷程以及有關學者們的一些逸事。「書海記趣」中的記趣,也是在借用沈三白書中的卷二:〈閑情記趣〉中那兩個字,其中的主要部份是有關三本名著的讀後報告。自從今年三月初新冠病情在美國境内爆發開始,我們就一直困坐家中,飽受病毒虐刑之苦,「病毒記虐」中的七篇文章,都是直接或間接有關這一方面。最後,「家居記事」那一組比較長的一篇〈鄉關何處〉,是在討論這半個多世紀以來美國、中國大陸與台灣世局之變遷。

現在這本書即將付梓,我要在此感謝 EHG Books 諸位小姐先生們的密切合作,也要謝謝我内人愛娟與子女們成華、蓓蒂與莉莉多年來對我的愛護、寬容與支持。

Right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Books Puddle, New York, New York, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
