Slight foxing to end pages and edge. Slight shelf wear to edges and corners of D/J. Apart from the Cabinet and Foreign Office papers the author had access to other official documents from Britain, many European countries, the Soviet Union, Canada and the USA; and he has drawn on a staggering volume of private papaers which have not previously been used by historians. From this mass of evidence the author has constructed a masterly narrative. Lucid and compulsively readable, it is at the same time meticulous in its use of courses, balanced and scholarly. There is no doubt that this book is the definitive account of one of the most critical years of this century. Illustrated. 456 pp.
