Item description from seller

Facsimile of the 1930 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Helena, Montana, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole capital city of 13,500 people, from the stores, banks and hotels of Main Street along Last Chance Gulch, through the State Capitol, the Northern Pacific and Great Northern depots and yards and the breweries, mills and lumber yards, to the residential avenues of the west and east sides, the Broadwater and the State Fair grounds, with the Hauser and Canyon Ferry power plants on the Missouri River. The seventy-eight numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and offices along North and South Main Street, Broadway, Jackson Street, Park Avenue, Sixth Avenue and Fuller Avenue - the State Capitol and the State Board of Health, the County Court House and Jail, the City Hall and Police Department, the Federal Building and Court Rooms, the U. S. Assay Office, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Post Office, the Public Library, the Algeria Temple, the Scottish Rite Temple, the Masonic Lodge, the Marlow Theatre, the Placer, Grandon, Harvey, Bristol and Park Avenue hotels, the Helena Commercial Club, the Telephone Building, the Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. and the Steamboat Block - through the Northern Pacific passenger and freight depots, round house and yards, the Great Northern depots and yards, the Montana Power Company's gas plant and sub-stations, the Hauser and Canyon Ferry power plants on the Missouri River, the Kessler Brewing Company and the old Union and Capitol breweries, the Helena Milling Company's flour mill, the Power grain elevator, the Interstate and Brown Brothers lumber yards, the A. M. Holter and Power hardware houses, the Union Wholesale Grocery, Swift and Company, the National Biscuit Company, the Kain Granite monumental works, the Western Clay brick yard, the Helena Meat Company slaughter house, the Continental, Texas, Shell and Richfield oil depots and the Municipal Water Works pumping stations, to St. John's and St. Peter's hospitals, the Florence Crittenton Home, St. Joseph's Orphans' Home, the Montana Children's Home, the Masonic and I. O. O. F. homes for the aged, the House of the Good Shepherd, Intermountain Union College, Mount St. Charles College, St. Vincent Academy, the State Vocational School for Girls, the Helena High School and the Bryant, Central, Emerson, Hawthorne and Jefferson schools, the Helena Cathedral, St. Peter's Episcopal, St. Paul's Methodist, the First Baptist, Christian, Congregational, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches, the Unitarian church, the Emanu-El Synagogue, the Broadwater Hotel and Natatorium, the State Fair grounds, Benton Avenue and Catholic cemeteries, and the residential avenues of the west and east sides. In 1930 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Helena for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch and the outlying sheets - the Broadwater and the State Fair grounds, and the Montana Power Company's Hauser and Canyon Ferry plants on the Missouri River - at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title sheet with its report and block index, the composite index, the composite key map and all seventy-eight numbered map sheets, 101 to 148 and 201 to 230. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Helena address back to 1930. 82 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
