18 " x 18 ". Color. Print. Color pictorial map of Smith College, Massachusetts. Second edition. Professionally framed with preservation glass (in frame 23 " x 24"). This colorful map, drawn to scale, illustrates the campus in the spring of 1928. It is intricately detailed with street labels and other notations including detail of campus pathways, images of Smithies walking, running, biking, playing tennis, field hockey, practicing archery and rowing on the pond. Many notable buildings can be identified: the "quad" circa 1928, College Hall, Seelye Hall, and many of the residence houses (cir 1928). Cleverly entwined in the illustrations throughout the map are mottos, verse and sayings. The artist surrounds this colorful map with an art deco boarder that includes 16 round cameos which depict scenes of momentous events including the "Gay 90 s" bicycling craze; girls basketball; the Grécourt Gates (which were installed in 1924); bi-planes; as well as cameos of Sophia Smith and the first three presidents of the college (which, in 1928, were the only presidents the college had had to date). The artist, Carolyn H. Galbraith, includes her initials in the lower right. Ms. Galbraith was a Smith alumna who created this colorful map and offered it for sale to her fellow Smithies in the 1928 fall edition of the Alumnae Quarterly. Here is the original poem Ms. Galbraith included in the Quarterly as advertisement: Smith College Campus: A Delightful Christmas Gift / 'Twill please you, I ween, / And rouse memories keen, / You've all got them, I know, kept on tap / To find many a scene, / In this folder of green, / Of Smith College, each marked on the map. / I have drawn it to scale; / You won't have to bewail / Its shortcomings you see, there are none! / So draw out your purses / And heed what the verse says : / Buy Now: own the source of your fun.
