An attractive early Oxford Classical Text (OCT) of Caesar's De Bello Gallico, edited by the distinguished Oxford classicist Renatus du Pontet (1845-1924). The volume presents the seven books of the Gallic War together with the eighth book traditionally attributed to Aulus Hirtius, accompanied by a scholarly critical apparatus based on the medieval manuscript tradition. The rear publisher's catalogue dated April 1921 strongly supports this as an early 1921 issue, only a year after Humphrey Milford expanded distribution of the Oxford Classical Text series in North America. This copy carries unusually appealing institutional provenance. It bears library stamps from Assumption Seminary Library, San Antonio, together with an earlier St. John's Seminary Library, San Antonio, Texas ownership stamp, suggesting transfer between related theological collections. The original checkout card remains neatly mounted inside the rear board with two surviving borrower entries, preserving evidence of actual classroom use rather than merely shelf storage. An ownership signature on title page ("Frederick.") appears on the title page. Such intact circulation cards are increasingly uncommon because many were removed when libraries deaccessioned books. The binding remains sound and complete with moderate rubbing to extremities, light fraying at spine ends and corners, and a slightly cocked spine from decades of use. Internally the text is clean with light age toning, scattered foxing, institutional markings as described, and no evidence of significant annotation. Condition is overall Good. No dust jacket, as issued. This appears to be the 1921 Clarendon Press printing of Du Pontet's Oxford Classical Text. Evidence includes the publisher's April 1921 catalogue at the rear, Humphrey Milford imprint, and the standard brown decorative OCT cloth binding used during the early twentieth century. While Du Pontet's edition originated earlier, this is an early post-World War I printing rather than a later mid-century reissue. The library evidence is arguably the most collectible aspect of this copy. Rather than diminishing its appeal, the paired St. John's Seminary and Assumption Seminary stamps document the movement of academic books through Catholic theological education in San Antonio. The preserved circulation pocket, borrower names, and shelf label transform the volume into a small archival artifact illustrating how Latin remained central to seminary education during the first half of the twentieth century. Many institutional copies lost these features during withdrawal; here they survive as part of the book's story. Renatus du Pontet (1845-1924) was one of Oxford's leading classical scholars and a Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford. His editions of Caesar became standard scholarly texts for generations of classicists and formed part of the prestigious Oxford Classical Texts (Scriptorum Classicorum Bibliotheca Oxoniensis) series, whose goal was to establish authoritative Latin and Greek texts from the surviving manuscript evidence. Du Pontet's De Bello Gallico remained the standard Oxford edition for decades and was widely used in universities and seminaries throughout the English-speaking world.…
