About this Item
Mr. Steele comments on real estate and U.S. President Wilson's influence while the country struggles with the Mexican Revolution. Steele had hoped to invest in Tampico property (and trade), 'but the 'bubble of anticipated fortune was exploded in its birth by the grand exodus of April one year ago at the fiasco fall of Vera Cruz.' This refers to the Battle of Vera Cruz and the 7 month US occupation of the city, as a response to the Tampico Affair of April 9, 1914. President Wilson had agreed not to invade Mexico without prior warning, but did so anyway, ultimately causing Mexico to refuse to join the US in WWI, and to remain neutral instead. 'This Town is steadily improving not withstanding the awful conditions existing throughout the Republic, conditions Wilson could know and does know but keeps from the American public." 3 manuscript pages, 6 x 9.5", on Hotel Southern Tampico letterhead, with matching envelope (torn at one end) and canceled 2 cent postage. Letter has second stamp removed. Seller Inventory # 23390
