. Hardcover. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1967, 1st edn. with dust cover in near-mint condition; red buckram in mint condition; 254pp+10pp notes, index, 155 halftones on art paper; an account of life in seven great cities on the eve of the First World War. In 1913 few people were aware that it was the end of an era. It was a year of dynastic celebrations, of artistic sensations, of extravagant parties, of the Tango. In Berlin the Kaiser celebrated his jubilee, in St Petersburg there were festivities for the third centenary of the Romanov dynasty; there were Futurist exhibitions in Paris, the Armory Show in New York at which Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase scandalized and baffled the public; and Diaghilev's Russian ballet company, which gave seasons in London and Paris. In London and Paris, too, there were protests by suffragettes and by anarchists, in Vienna the scandal of Redl, the Chief of Intelligence blackmailed into spying for the Russians, and in Rome, as in every European capital and in New York, there were the sumptuous parties, for which costumes were designed by Poiret and Bakst. The glitter of pre-war international society is evocatively conveyed in Virginia Cowles' sharply perceptive book, and the outstanding illustrations, chosen from contemporary sources, vividly depict the fashions and fads, the scandals and sensations of 1913. 10x13". . . . .
