Meroitic Inscriptions, Part II: Napata to Philae and Miscellaneous — F. Ll. Griffith (1912) I ssued as the Twentieth Memoir of the Archaeological Survey of Egypt (Egypt Exploration Fund), this 1912 volume by the pioneering Egyptologist F. Ll. Griffith is a cornerstone reference for the study of the Meroitic script and the history of ancient Kush/Nubia. Meroitic Inscriptions, Part II expands the corpus beyond earlier site groups, assembling texts from key regions along the Nile and presenting them as primary evidence for names, titles, religious formulae, and local administration within the Meroitic world. Organized geographically, the work follows inscriptional material across the Nile corridor, connecting places such as Napata and Philae with additional miscellaneous monuments and records. Griffith’s treatment reflects the methods of early twentieth-century epigraphy: careful copying and classification, comparative notes, and attention to recurring word-groups and formulas that help define how Meroitic was written and used in commemorative and official contexts. A major feature of this memoir is its supporting apparatus for readers working directly with the script. It includes reference tools (such as abbreviation keys and alphabet tables) and an extensive indexing approach that makes the volume especially useful for researchers tracking Meroitic words, names, and repeated groups across different monuments. The accompanying forty-eight plates provide visual documentation of inscriptions and related material, preserving important readings and contexts for further study.
