Item description from seller

Facsimile of the 1912 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Wausau, Wisconsin, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city on both banks of the Wisconsin River, from the business blocks of Third Street and the saw mills and lumber yards on McIndoe Island to the residential streets of the east side and the West Side, and out to the mill villages of Schofield, Kelley, Rothschild, Weston and Brokaw with the Marathon and Wausau paper mills. The thirty-nine numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks and halls along Third Street and Scott, Jefferson, Washington, Forest and Grand Avenue - the Marathon County Court House and Jail, the new and old City Halls, the Post Office, the Public Library, the Armory, the fire stations, the Y. M. C. A. Building, the Masonic Temple, the Elks' Lodge Hall, the Grand Opera House, and the Bellis, Northern, Island, Riverside, Washington, Park, City and Commercial hotels, the Olympia, Sloan and Central houses - through the Chicago and North Western and Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul depots, the Wausau Street Railway car barns and power plant, the city water works and Wausau Gas Company, the Alexander, Barker and Stewart, B. Heinemann, F. Schubring and J. Mortenson lumber yards and mills, the Wausau Box and Lumber Company, the Wisconsin Box Company, Goodwillie Brothers' box factory, the Curtis and Yale Company factories, J. M. Kuebler's sash, door and blind factory, the Underwood Veneer Company, the Union Tanning Company, the Government Experimental Pulp Mill, the Northern Milling Company and McEachron and Company's flour mills, the Mathie and G. Ruder breweries, the Marathon Granite Company and Meisner's granite works, D. S. Murray's saw-mill machinery works, the Wausau Iron Works, Foundry and Machine Shop, Canning, Fixture and Furniture, Fluff Rug, Novelty, Quartz and Sand Paper companies, out to the Brooks and Ross Lumber Company's saw and planing mill at Schofield, J. Manser's saw and planing mills at Kelley on the Eau Claire River, the Wilson-Hurd Company at Weston, the Marathon Paper Mill Company at Rothschild and the Wausau Paper Mill Company at Brokaw, to St. Mary's Hospital, the Marathon County Hospital and Home for Chronic Insane, Alms House and Agricultural School, the High School, the Lincoln, Longfellow, Humboldt, Franklin, Grant, Irving, Washington and Schofield public schools, St. James, St. Mary's German, St. Michael's Polish and St. Stephen's churches and schools, St. John's Episcopal, the Triune German Church and School, Emmanuel Norwegian, Evangelical Lutheran Zion, St. Paul's, First Methodist, First Presbyterian, Swedish Lutheran and Universalist churches, and the residential streets of the east side, the West Side and Brokaw. In 1912 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Wausau for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city and the mill villages of Schofield, Kelley, Rothschild, Weston and Brokaw at fifty feet to the inch, and the Brooks and Ross mill and lumber yard at Schofield at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the combined title and index sheet and all thirty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 39, sheet 1 being the key map with the fire and water report. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Wausau address back to 1912. 42 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
