Item description from seller

Facsimile of the 1911 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole Norfolk County town of 16,000 people along the Neponset River, from the stores, halls and banks of Everett Square and River Street through the machine works, rubber works, paper mills and railroad shops to the residential streets of Fairmount, Clarendon Hills and Readville and the Readville Trotting Park. The twenty-eight numbered sheets that follow work block by block from the stores, banks and halls around Everett Square and along River Street, Hyde Park Avenue, Fairmount Avenue and Central Avenue - the Town Buildings and Police Station, the Central Fire Station, the Public Library, the Post Office, the Everett, Harvard, Kennedy's, French, Masonic and Unity blocks, Waverley Hall, the Opera House, the Veteran Fireman's Association hall, the New England Telephone office, the Hyde Park Gazette printing house, and the Y. M. C. A. - through the New York, New Haven & Hartford stations at Hyde Park, Readville, Fairmount, Clarendon Hills and River Street, the freight houses, Power Station No. 5 and the railroad repair shops at Readville, the Old Colony Street Railway car barns, the B. F. Sturtevant Company foundry and machine shops, the American Tool and Machine Company, the Becker-Brainard milling machine works, the Hyde Park Steel Casting Company, the Exeter Machine Works, the Robinson machine shop, the Stafford weaving-machinery works, the Bay State Insulated Wire & Cable Company, the Atlantic Rubber, Hyde Park Rubber, North American Rubber and Wheeler & Shaw rubber-substitute works, the Tileston & Hollingsworth and Mattapan paper mills, the Fairmount cotton underwear and roll-paper mills, the Manchaug cotton mills, the Gray shoddy mill, the Union and Willcomb curled-hair factories, the Turner & Hefler dyestuffs works, the Kenyon and Readville color works, the Readville carriage factory, the Upham carriage works, the Hodgkinson woodworking shop, the Hyde Park Electric Light & Power plant, the water-works pumping stations, the Hyde Park Steam Laundry and the coal, grain and lumber yards, to the Hyde Park High School, the Damon, Buttler, Greenwood, Grew, Hilton Street, Fairmount, Readville and parochial schools, the First Congregational, Methodist Episcopal, Baptist and Presbyterian churches, the Episcopal, Unitarian and Hazelwood Unitarian churches, the Roman Catholic Church and School of the Precious Blood, the Christian Science and Phillips Brooks reading rooms, the Readville Trotting Park and the Trotting Horse Breeders' Association, and the residential streets of Fairmount, Readville, Clarendon Hills and the town out to Mill Pond and Sprague Pond. In 1911 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Hyde Park for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: all twenty-nine numbered map sheets, 1 to 29, sheet 1 being the combined title, key map and index sheet with its report on the water works and fire department. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Hyde Park address back to 1911. 30 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
