Facsimile of the 1907 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Green Bay, Wisconsin, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city of 24,000 people on both banks of the Fox River, from the stores, hotels and Court House of Washington and Main Streets, through the railroad shops, breweries, paper mills, lumber yards and fish docks, to the residential streets of Navarino, Astor and Fort Howard and out to the County Infirmary and the State Reformatory.
The eighty-three numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres along Washington Street, Main Street, Cherry Street, Pine Street and Broadway - the County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the Post Office, the Carnegie Library, the Chapman, Duchateau and Parmentier blocks, the Bijou, Minahan and Green Bay theatres, Turner Hall, Ansgar Hall, the Elks' Club House, the Y. M. C. A. building, the Beaumont, Cook, Bay City, Commercial, Arlington, Gotto, St. Paul, Kewaunee, Lake Shore, North Western, Reis, Union and Tremont hotels and houses - through the Chicago & North Western stations and round house, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul shops and stations, the Green Bay & Western shops and stations, the Green Bay Traction Company, the Green Bay Gas & Electric works and the city Water Works, the Hagemeister, Rahr, Hochgreve and Van Dyke breweries, the Northern Paper Mills, the Hoberg tissue-paper factory and the Green Bay Paper and Fibre Company, the Diamond, Northland and Mueller lumber yards, the Barkhausen brick and tile works and coal yards, the Cargill elevators, the Ebeling flour mill and the Cedar Creek Flour Mills, the Green Bay Foundry and Machine Works, the Burns boiler and Straubel machine works, the International Harvester Company, the Wainwright glove, Gunderson shoe, Badger Invalid Bed, Kemnitz furniture and Mueller casket factories, the Northern Saddlery and Harness Company, the Fox River soap works, the candy, canning and fish companies, the Couley, Thrall and Saunders boat builders and the Standard Oil depot, to St. Vincent Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital and the General Hospital, the Good Shepherd's Home, St. Joseph's Academy and Orphan Asylum, the Odd Fellows' Home, the Brown County Infirmary and Insane Asylum, the Wisconsin State Reformatory, the East and West High Schools and the ward schools, St. Francis Cathedral and the Cathedral School, the Franciscan Fathers' Monastery, the Catholic, Lutheran, Moravian and Norwegian churches and the synagogue, Hagemeister Park and Astor Park, and the residential streets of Navarino, Astor, Whitney's Addition, Fort Howard and the East River.
In 1907 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Green Bay for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch and the Northland Lumber Company's yard on the Fox River at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the combined title and index sheet, the key map and all eighty-three numbered map sheets, printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on premium color paper. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Green Bay address back to 1907.
