Item description from seller

Facsimile of the 1906 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Fresno, California, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city, from the stores, hotels and Court House of I, J and K Streets and the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe depots, through the raisin and fruit packing houses along the tracks, to the residential streets out to Belmont and Blackstone Avenues, the Fair Grounds and Recreation Park, with fourteen outlying sheets for the wineries, vineyards and packing houses of the country round, from Fruitvale and Minnewawa to Malaga. The one hundred thirteen numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres along I Street, J Street, K Street, H Street, Mariposa Street and Tulare Street - the Fresno County Court House and Jail in Court House Square, the City Hall and Public Library, the Armory Hall, the Barton Opera House, the Empire, Novelty and Chinese theatres, the Masonic Temple, the Elks Lodge, the Grand Baths, the Fresno National Bank, Republic, Improvement Company's, Griffith, Helm, Fiske and Forsyth buildings, the Edgerly, Hughes and Pioneer blocks, the Grand Central, Fresno, Sequoia and Boscongado hotels and the Y. M. C. A. - through the Southern Pacific passenger station, freight house, round house and repair shop, the Santa Fe depots and round house, the city railway car barn, the raisin and fruit packing houses of the Central California Raisin, Guggenhime, Griffin and Skelley, Earl Fruit, Hobbs, Monarch, Seropian, Phoenix and Co-operative Packers' companies, the Pacific Coast Seeded Raisin plants, the California Fruit Canners' branch, the Roeding fig and olive works, the Fresno Winery, the National Wine Company, the Fresno Brewing Company, the Sperry Flour mill, the Fresno Agricultural Works, the Valley Foundry and Fresno Machine and Boiler Works, the California Pine Box, Fresno, Valley and Hollenbeck and Bush lumber yards, the gas works and electric plants, the six water-works pumping stations, the ice and cold-storage plants, and the macaroni, soap and soda works, to the County Hospital and Alms House, the County Orphanage, the Burnett and Fresno sanitariums, the High School, St. Augustine Academy, the Columbia, Hawthorne, Kirk, Lincoln, Lowell and Washington schools, the Armenian, German, Danish, Swedish and Chinese churches and missions, the Japanese Buddhist Temple, the churches of every denomination, the Fair Grounds race track and Recreation Park, and the residential streets out to Belmont and Blackstone Avenues - with outlying sheets for Barton's, Eisen's, Centennial, Granz, Mattei, St. George, Sierra Park and Scandinavian Colony wineries, the Fancher Creek Nursery, the Minnewawa, Fruitvale, Las Palmas, Hedgerow and Montecito vineyards and the packing houses at Malaga. In 1906 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Fresno for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title sheet, the index, the key map, the key map of specials and all one hundred thirteen numbered map sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Fresno address back to 1906. 118 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback. Printed to order and shipped directly to you ? please allow up to 7 business days before shipment. Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back.…
