Facsimile of the 1904 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Reading, Pennsylvania, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city of 90,000 people, from the stores, hotels and Court House around Penn Square and the Philadelphia & Reading shops and yards, through the iron, steel, hat and hosiery works along the Schuylkill, to Glenside, West Reading and Mt. Penn Village, with outlying sheets for Mohnsville, Wyomissing, Shillington, Montello, Orrton, St. Lawrence, Temple, Blandon, Fleetwood, Seyfert and Gibraltar. The one hundred eleven numbered sheets, with skeleton sheets for the eight most crowded blocks, work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres around Penn Square and along Penn Street, Court Street, Washington Street and Franklin Street - the County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the United States Post Office, the Academy of Music, the Grand Opera House, the Temple Theatre, the Rajah Temple, the Baer, Mutual and Hendel buildings, the Dives, Pomeroy & Stewart and Kline, Eppenheimer stores, the market houses, the Hotel Penn, Mansion House, American House, Franklin, Continental and Crystal Palace hotels - through the Philadelphia & Reading main depot, shops and yards, the Pennsylvania Railroad freight house, the United Traction Company's car houses, the Reading Iron Company's Keystone Furnace, Oley Street, Sheet and Roller mills, Scott Foundry and Wright Steel Tube Works, the Carpenter Steel Works, the Henry Clay Furnace, the Temple Iron Company's furnace, the Seyfert and Blandon rolling mills, the Gibraltar Iron Works, the car-wheel, hardware and stove works, the Reading Standard Cycle and Acme Motor Car companies, the Duryea Power Company, the Hampden, Kessler, Mohn and Globe hat factories, the Nolde & Horst and Wyomissing hosiery mills, the Textile Machine Works, the Reading and Garner cotton mills, the Grimshaw and York silk mills, the Reading Paper Mills, the Montello Brick Works, the Barbey, Lauer, Muhlenberg and Stocker breweries and the cigar factories, to the Reading and St. Joseph's hospitals, the Home for Friendless Children, the Berks County Almshouse and Fair Grounds, the Boys' and Girls' High Schools and the public schools of every ward, the churches of every denomination and Temple Oheb Sholom, the Mt. Penn Tower and the Neversink Mountain Hotel, and the residential streets of Glenside, West Reading and Mt. Penn Village, with Mohnsville, Wyomissing, Shillington, Montello, Orrton, St. Lawrence, Temple, Blandon, Fleetwood, Seyfert and Gibraltar. In 1904 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Reading for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title sheet, the index of streets, the index of specials, the key map and all one hundred eleven numbered map sheets together with the eight skeleton sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Reading address back to 1904. 124 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback. Printed to order and shipped directly to you ? please allow up to 7 business days before shipment. Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back.…
