Re-backed spines tight and intact. Original gilt deco & spine labels are chipped & lightly dulled, but still legible & gilt-work still pleasing to the eye. Top edge painted black - which is starting to dull. David Garrick bookplate found on Vol. I's front paste-down only (i.e. not in vol. II). Off-setting to all edges of all paste-downs from glue residue applied during re-backing. Previous ownership signature in pen on both front paste-downs: Beth Roman Harris. David Garrick (1717-1779) was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager, producer, and bibliophile who influenced nearly every aspect of 18th century European theatre practice. Book collecting was no fringe leisure activity for Garrick; it was a lifelong passion & preoccupation. He assembled a general library of over 3,000 volumes and a renowned dramatic library of 1,300 plays, the latter bequeathed to the British Museum in 1779. Rich in English drama and books on theatre history, dramaturgy and the theory of dramatic character, the library was recognized as an unrivaled scholarly resource was contemporary editors of Shakespeare and other early English dramatists, and by literary and musical historians. Garrick extended liberal access and borrowing privileges to friends and acquaintances such as Charles Burney, Thomas Percy, George Steevens and Thomas Warton. Samuel Johnson once reportedly mocked Garrick's bibliophilic ambitions, saying: "Look, David, you do understand plays, but you known nothing about books!" Johnson, who also briefly taught the young Garrick at his school near Lichfield, did not offer a ringing endorsement of Garrick s facility with the dead languages. James Boswell relates that Johnson said of Garrick, He has not Latin enough. He finds out the Latin by the meaning, rather than the meaning by the Latin. Gains Sallustius Crispus, usually anglicized as Sallust, (86 - c. 35 BC) was a Roman historian and politician from a plebeian family. Probably born at Amiternum in the country of the Sabines, Sallust become a partisan of Julius Caesar (100 to 44 BC), circa 50s BC.
