Memoires de Monsieur de la Chastre, Chez Pierre Van Dyck, A Cologne, 1664, 400 pp. Discours Merveilleux De la vie, Actions & Deportemens de la Reyne Catherine de Medicis, mere de Francois II, Charles IX, Henry III, Rois de France, Imprimee a la Haie, 1663, 156 pp. In good condition. Vellum is slightly darkened, but remains in nice condition. Manuscript lettering on spine appears more modern. Light creasing at spine extremes. Interior typically toned with light foxing throughout. Unmarked. Binding is tight and intact. Lipped vellum is a little stiff to open, but is readable. Please see photos. Memoires was composed by Claude de Bourdeille, comte de Montresor (1606-1663). He was a French aristocrat and Count who played a role in the intrigues of the first half of the 17th century, and was also a memoir-writer. Memoires was published posthumously in 1663. Memoires de M.L.D.R was written by Francois de la Rochefoucauld (1613-1680). Rochefoucauld was a French moralist and author of maxims and memoirs. He is part of the movement of classicism and best known for his maxims. His maxims focused on the merciless nature of human conduct, with a cynical attitude towards virtuosity and avowals of affection, friendship, love and loyalty. Memoires de M.L.D.R are of high interest and literary merit. Discours Merveilleux De la vie, Actions & Deportemens de la Reyne Catherine de Medicis is attributed to Henri Estienne, Théodore de Bèze, Jean de Serre, Pierre Pithou or Innocent Gentillet but without any proof or certainty. The black legend of Queen Catherine has its roots in this pamphlet which tends to show that all her actions aim to destroy the kingdom of France with, first and foremost, the responsibility for Saint Bartholomew's Day.
