About this Item
The book is not dated, however a previous owner penned his name and the date of that illustrious day off the top edge of the title page (Edward V. Patterson, September 13, 1900). There is no other writing be found anywhere in the book. You can see the covers in the photos. They are either leather or imitation leather. The book came from a bookstore owned by Edward Fox, the publisher. As you can see from the photo of the title page there is a reference to a Shakespeare View Store. On the last page you can read the following: 'Visitors to the Home of Shakespeare! The Best and Cheapest Collection of Photographs and the Greatest Variety at Edward Fox's, 1, High Street, Corner of Bridge Street.' The covers have some scuffing on the spine and off the bottom edge of the front. The gilt lettering on the front is very bright. The book opens up to the title page. I don't know whether there was an end paper. There isn't a rear end paper, so maybe not. On the front inside covers side of its juncture with the facing title page, off the bottom and top edges of the juncture, the paper has lifted up a little, pulling away from the juncture. However, underneath that paper another layer of paper is attached, and at the middle of the top layer of the juncture the paper is in place, so it doesn't appear that the cover is in any danger of detaching. The rear cover seems solidly bound. There's some toning just off the bottom edge of the front inside cover and title page. It goes away after that. The pages are quite clean. The verso of the title page is a page of text titled Short Description of the Places of Interest. It picks up and concludes on the front side of the last page of the book. In between are the 16 photographs. The pages are in very good condition. All 16 photographs are present. I don't see any soiling. There is a tiny, fairly inconspicuous crease just off the tips of the top corners. I'm not seeing any placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the aforementioned dated signature is the only writing to be found anywhere. Here are the subjects of some of the photographs: cottage of Mary Arden, Memorial Statue in Theatre Gardens, The Clopton Bridge, American Memorial Fountain, John Harvard's House, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Birthroom at Shakespeare's House, Shakespeare's birthplace, kitchen at Shakespeare's house, Shakespeare's Grave and Monument, Church of the Holy Trinity, Shakespeare's Burial Place. John Harvard founded Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From the text: The House in which Judith Shakespeare, the poet's younger daughter, spent her married life (36 years) is situated at the corner of High Street and Bridge Street, and is now occupied by Edward Fox, bookseller, and publisher of this View Album.'.
