This is the perfect encyclopedia of martial arts for those who train in the “Russian” systems, but also for anyone who has ever been involved in law enforcement, security, executive protection, the military, Kung Fu, Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and combative sports like boxing and wrestling. It is a book of, and for, warriors.
Even this many years after the Soviet Union’s collapse, the world has only begun to glimpse the breadth and depth of the Russian, Ukrainian and Soviet (RUS) fighting disciplines. This book begins with the history of the different martial arts from India to Asia, Greece and Rome, and their separate development in Eastern Europe beginning 15 centuries ago. It is also part personal journey, part resource and reference guide, and part how-to training manual.
Through this book, allow yourself to be transported across 2,000 years of ancient savagery, birth and demise of empires, invasions and wars, death, sacrifice and victory, that necessitated the development of truly versatile and efficacious fighting arts.
Among many topics, it contains:
- Critical analyses of different military hand-to-hand systems and other popular martial arts and how they compare to the Russian systems.
- Why the Russian Special Forces (Spetsnaz) relate to US SWAT teams and how their skills are well-suited for American police.
- How Spetsnaz stack up against the skills of the Green Berets. Who is better and why?
- Skills and principles for fighting unarmed, including disarming weapons.
- Knife, shovel and chain fighting.
- Women’s combat-based, realistic self-defense.
- The principles of combat other martial arts ignore, but which allow you to react to situations and threats that you have not been specifically trained for.
- Ancient Cossack strength exercises never seen in the West but still used and further developed by the Spetsnaz, using nothing more than your own body or a partner.
- The benefits of the ancient Slavic system of relaxation, mental, physical and spiritual health for modern life.
Famed author, speaker and trainer of military and police, Army Ranger Lt. Col. (ret.) Dave Grossman, wrote this:
A superb book! A true tour de force on an intriguing and important subject, written by the definitive expert. Prof. Giduck has an amazing bio, with unparalleled credentials and experience in this realm. He takes the reader on a fascinating and informative journey across the centuries and millennia, and across the vast Eurasian Steppes, on a topic that is truly vital to our times.
Exciting, dynamic, and filled with astonishing and intriguing historic examples, this is the authoritative book on a subject that is unknown to most readers. 1500 Years of Fighting would be enjoyable, accessible, and worthwhile for all readers. For those who would hope to understand the Russian war in Ukraine, this is a vital resource. And for all students of history, military history, or the martial arts, this book is required reading and an essential component in every personal library.
