Lower edge jagged probably from have the bottom portion of the page torn off. Verso blank except for "Nancy Davis Freedom License May 1822." which was probably a filing notation. The meaning of this document is ambiguous. It could be a document intended to help Nancy Davis, a formerly enslaved African American get a legal document documenting her free status. It could also be a document intended to help establish that Nancy Davis was not indentured and therefore able to marry or do something else without requiring permission from someone else. Since the document gives no detail as to location or much of anything else that would be helpful, it is difficult to do more than hope that this vague document was helpful to Nancy Davis.
