This book evolved over two years of teaching art courses at The Rhode Island School of Design where we discovered that the first, and most difficult task was to return to students their innocence. We found that unlearning was necessary to allow unfettered creativity to flower. This book is not a course or a series of lessons leading to a foreseen goal. It is a humble series of suggestions as to how one may rearrange the ways we look at the world. These challenges are intended to inspire a chain of intellectual and visual associations leading, hopefully, to fresh thinking. We try to encourage one to play with objects and ideas, and to turn things this way to explore alternatives. The materials needed are simple - the fixtures of our daily lives. The hundred projects in the volume require few hand skills. Children can perform them as well as adults, for they are less tangled in preconceptions. We hope this book will remind you of what it was like to be a child, when one could make a game out of whatever came to hand - a trash bin became a boat, a bag of grass clippings an ocean, a tin can a telescope, your dog a spouting whale. We want these challenges to engender that imaginative freedom. When freed of encumbrances each of us will find their own way to create freely with the materials of our own lives; each of us find their own way of having fun with alligators.
