What is it? 100 Things is a self-help orientation guidebook for students with disabilities that is designed to help identify problem areas, offer suggestions, and provide web site connections to assistance for building success with issues of academic and social life in college. It explains what is expected of students with disabilities in college and provides helpful tips and strategies that can help students avoid the common problems of transitioning from secondary school. It also highlights crucial information students need to know about practices for accommodations, expectations of professors, and where and how to communicate their disability-related college needs.
Why is it valuable? 100 THINGS is a consumer-friendly reference book that students can use individually and on a weekly basis to problem-solve common difficulties associated with adjustment to college. It clarifies the WHAT, WHY, HOW, WHEN, and WHAT IF's that need to be understood so students with disabilities are armed with key information to make informed decisions. As an ongoing resource it not only gets students started off right in college but empowers them with skills and strategies to persist in completing their degrees. Plus, it is formatted as an easy-to-use reference with a convenient Index that can serve to quickly alleviate awkward and unnerving feelings over circumstances before they occur;
Why does it work? Ask STUDENTS with disabilities! Dr. Johnson and Ms. Hines did. 100's of them. Their responses as consumers pinpointed what was most important in adjusting to higher education including many tips students discovered they should have learned before they arrived. Their suggestions were developed into easy-to-read bullet-statements to one-paragraph descriptions. Each topic is an "eye-opener" that gives students the strategies for better navigating the transition to life as a college student. Included are
tips, directions, options, and web-based resources for helpful information about a wide cross-section of critical issues, including differences in college culture, legal, and personal affairs. It serves as a "one-stop" resource for students with disabilities and becomes a valuable fingertip reference for finding solutions to problems "when and where" they occur. It reinforces success and persistence in instruction by serving as a "road map" of tips others have found successful in meeting their education and career goals. Its goal" "to empower you, the student with disabilities to focus on your abilities while being responsible for your disabilities".
Why is it different? It instantly puts the right kind of information into you hands in the best way possible so you can use it when and where you needs occur. Its short topical format is a quick reference. Its web links highlight expanded information that turns 100 THINGS into a practical encyclopedia of helpful information. Plus, a Glossary is included that defines key terms so students gain quick access to key vocabulary that can often cause confusion.
